Field deployments for everyone to see
The advent of video as a standard mode of communication has opened up our oceangraphic world to outsiders. It also provides tips and hints to those who are familiar with the ocean but are new to the art of deploying and retrieving ocean instrumentation.
2010 User seminars
Within the span of three weeks we have arranged two well-attended user seminars (Seattle and Oslo) as well as our annual international representative seminar. Listening to excellent speakers on both sides of the Atlantic was both interesting and fun. Talking to our own commercial branch is equally important since is is invaluable for feeding customer comments to the Nortek development and production staff. Still, it also feels like a medium size tornado just came through and we are still a little dazzled.
"Askefast"
is the latest addition to the Norwegian dictionary. Literally it means "stuck in ash" and it is quickly becoming one of the more common phrases to describe the effect of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano on everyday life in Europe.
Wave anaysis seminar in Germany
The number of AWAC users in Germany is steadily increasing, and in 2010 we have reached a critical number where it was time for a user seminar exclusively devoted to wave analysis. It was our first experience with this format, and judging from the feedback we received from the participants this is something we should do also in other parts of the world.
Oceanology 2010
OI 2010 is coming up this week and the anticipation is building. Last time we were frustrated by the high costs, the lack of "real" customers, and the fatigue of talking all the time without really accomplishing anything.
Overwhelming response to TellTale
Little did we know that the TellTale beta test program would lead to an overflow in the inbox. We anticipated that the concept would have immediate appeal to operational oceanographers but we have obviously hit a nerve with all those who don't sleep well before or after deployments.
Breaking the ice
Our new managing director, Tore Hofstad, started at Nortek on February 1 and we are pleased to report that he has finished the first week of training. This included deploying an instrument with the test group - as they do every day to make sure all instruments go into the ocean for 12-18 hours before they are shipped out the door. Since the winter has come down pretty hard on this year, the task was not quite as simple as he first thought......
